He had positioned himself near the window. He was in the same motel, but at the other end, where the buildings angled back toward the highway in an L shape. It wasn’t the best vantage point, but he wouldn’t be spotted, and he could see if they came or left the room.

After an hour of no movement, he turned the phone on, waited for it to find the signal, then dialled a number from memory. As it rang, he swiped a sweating hand against his thigh.

He heard something pick up on the other end. There was no greeting. There never was.

“They’ve stopped for the night,” he said.

“And?” The voice was deep. Deep as an abyss.

“And I remain vigilant. I will make you aware of any update.”

“Do so.” The phone’s speaker crackled with the inadequacy of transmitting the depth of the speaker’s voice.

The connection broke.

He erased the call log, powered the phone down again, and put it back in his small travelling bag, sitting on the table right by the window. He would not leave his station until they were heading back on the road.

He swiped his hands over his sweating face, wiped them on his pants again.

It was going to be a long night.
